Service You will Appreciate

You will love shopping in Beijing, whether shopping in the upscale boutiques of five-star hotels, the knick-knack shops at tourist sites, art galleries or antique shops. It is an adventure not to be missed and a favourite pastime of nearly everyone in the city.
When the capital won the rights to host the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games, a question was asked: How should Beijing's shopkeepers, policemen, cabbies, bus conductors, salespeople, waitresses and bank tellers improve their services for the Games?
Under an ambitious training programme, all of those who work at restaurants, parks, banks, on the police force and in the transportation and other service sectors, which are seen as "windows on the city," have been taking crash courses in occupational skills and ethics, while brushing up on their understanding of what the Olympics is and what a distinguishing Games with Chinese characteristics requires.
By the end of 2007, 810,000 workers had received certificates that qualified them for work assignments considered critical to the Games’ success.
The government even published a textbook to train employees in these "window sectors" as a way of providing improved services to improve the presence of Beijing in the minds of visitors to China’s capital.
For example, the book details exacting standards for the appearance of taxi drivers, which the drivers themselves suggested and embraced. They are not allowed to don sleeveless shirts, have excessive tattoos or shave their heads. Women drivers should not apply heavy makeup or wear mini-skirts. They are to bathe and brush their teeth more diligently and avoid sleeping or eating in their vehicles when off duty. Neat-looking and English-speaking drivers are intended to impress visitors right from their arrival in the city.
The training textbook covers all major "window sectors" except for the police force. But according to local media reports, officers in the Tian'anmen Square area were among the first to have obtained these certificates. As an indication of their readiness, 323 officers or 76.9 percent of the total in the police sub-bureaus can speak rudimentary to advanced English and other foreign languages.
Services are basically a "feeling business," as Disneyland often describes itself. People prefer to know or do business with people who seem caring and concerned not only about themselves and their own businesses, but also about the tourist and how they feel, while being receptive to the tourist’s needs.
But even where visitors encounter taxi drivers who don’t speak a foreign language or find themselves in a shop where few foreigners go, they are likely to find shopkeepers and wait staff who will bend over backwards to help ensure that the visitor gets what they want or need. Count on it.

Shopping Areas

Wangfujing 王府井商业区

Wangfujing Dajie is a bustling pedestrian shopping mall and a place where old and new blend perfectly: it’s a wonderful place just to sit, sip on a cool drink and “people-watch,” because people here come from all across China and from around the world. As one of the oldest shopping streets in Beijing, Wangfujing features many “Time Honoured Brand” stores, most of which are more than 100 years old. International brands, fantastic shops and restaurants, bookstores and an old, refurbished western-styled church epitomize modern Beijing. In the early evening, check out the “snack street” on the north side of Donghuamen Dajie, east of Wangfujing Dajie.

Check out Wangfujing’s bookstores to get the latest, best-selling novels, the works of masters of literature from around the world, language books and audio support to read while travelling China’s vast expanses after you leave the capital.

How to get there: Subway Line 1, Wangfujing Subway Station or buses that ply Chang’an Jie.

Xidan Street 西单商业区

The Xidan Commercial Area, north of Xi Chang’an Jie, offers a wide range of shopping options. Xidan has four big shopping centres (the Chung-Yo Shopping Centre, Xidan Shopping Centre, Grand Pacific, Joy City and Maison Mode) and Beijing’s biggest book store, the Beijing Books Building (see its excellent imported books section in the basement area).

How to get there: Subway Line 1, Xidan Station

Qianmen-Dashilan Shopping Area 前门-大栅栏商业区

As the oldest commercial street in Beijing, the fortunes of the Qianmen-Dashilan shopping area have reflected the city’s sometimes turbulent history. Many laozihao (Chinese “Time Honoured Brand” businesses) have welcomed customers for generations here. After recent renovation, this centuries-old shopping area is booming once again.

How to get there: Subway Line 2, Qianmen Station

Fuchengmen-Fuxingmen Area 阜成门-复兴门商业区

Just outside the Second Ring Road in western Beijing, there’s a multitude of discount markets selling everything from tools to toys. There are some great prices on clothing and small electronics, but haggling is required at every small stall. The biggest and most comprehensive markets in the area are Wantong, Guanyuan and Tianyi.

How to get there: Subway Line 2, Fuxingmen or Fuchengmen Station

Silk Street 秀水街

The old Silk Alley was the treat of all treats for bargain-hunting tourists. Today, development in the area has made way for bigger and brighter things: one of which is the new Silk Street, with many of the traders and wares of the old alley now spread out over three floors of this comfortable, safe new building on Beijing’s main drag.

As before, the Silk Street offers great values on fine cashmere and silk of all types, with designer labels available at knock-down prices. The Silk Street keeps respectable hours, so beat the rush and get there early. Nearby shopping malls offer plenty of places to rest, sip designer coffee or catch a quick bite.

Centrally located, Yashow is surrounded by the bars, restaurants and cafes of the Sanlitun area, the most popular eating and drinking area for tourists in the city.

The market itself offers every imaginable article of clothing. If it’s on the market, Yashow will have it – or a version of it at the very least. Try shoes in the basement, custom-fitted suits on the third, and fashion clothes for young and old on the floors in between. Luggage and hats can also be found in the basement.
