Although some local media have asserted that hotels in Beijing are planning to charge non-official visitors eight to ten times their usual rates during the Olympic period, few are now taking these claims seriously. Olympic organizers have indicated that the rates will likely be less than was feared and have dismissed price-hike hysteria as a marketing gimmick used by some proprietors to test the market.
In fact, organizers say that rates for the “Olympic Family” will likely be lower than previously quoted. The market will decide the prices for those guests not affiliated to the Olympic Family, they said, but other observers say room rates should not be as high as those seen in Athens in 2004.
Online travel sites like Ctrip (http://www.ctrip.com), Elong (http://www.elong.com) and Beijing Hotels Travel Guide (www.beijing-hotels.net) have detailed information on hotel rates, often with discounts. Hotel rates are subject to 15 percent service charge and peak from September to October.
Because of a long-term building programme that has progressed steadily over recent years, the Chinese capital has an abundance of accommodation, from star-rated hotels to inexpensive youth hostels that foreign residents simply rave about. Beijing has 658 star-rated hotels—with more on the way—that will be ready for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. If you want to taste the local lifestyle of old Beijing, look for a room in a courtyard residence in a neighbourhood accessed via shady lanes.
For deluxe five-star hotels, the average price for a standard room per night during the peak tourism season typically ranges from 2,000 yuan to 5,000 yuan (US$250–$625). The average price of a four-star hotel is between 1,000 yuan and 2,000 yuan (US$125–$250) per night.
But, what about people who cannot afford four- or five-star luxury?
“It’s nice that the Olympic committee and other VIPs get room rates guaranteed at reasonable prices, but what about regular people?” one reader asked in an e-mail to China Daily, citing a friend’s experience of being quoted 2,000 yuan a night during the Games for a room that normally goes for only 200 yuan.
Suffice to say that in a city with a hotel development strategy as developed as Beijing’s, competition in the market is a fact, and savvy buyers should be able to find a room to suite their needs at an affordable price, but shopping around and negotiating—which is common to experienced international travellers—could end up in great savings. Look around: bargains can be found.
No doubt every international visitor will be able to find a bed when they come to Beijing this summer. But in a worst-case scenario, look into the star-rated hotels available along rail or bus lines in neighbouring provinces and municipalities that lay within a 100 kilometre radius of the capital.
The biggest worry, though, should be: at
what cost? Because any hotel that accepts foreign travellers will be
comfortable enough for any Olympic fan or visitor to Beijing.
