What do you want? Beijing has it all!
Beijing is a city where the import of culture and entertainment is taken seriously, whether in the fine arts or in a city park on a Sunday afternoon where choirs sing, lone players strum guitars or saw away at an erhu or violins, often accompanied by accordion players. Retirees can be seen practicing Peking Opera or taijiquan and taijijian, and even young people and children sometimes get into the act. If high cultural entertainment is what you’re looking for, you will find it in Beijing’s dynamic, new National Grand Theatre, but this new cultural icon is hardly stands alone in a city that adores the performing arts, plays, movies, concerts of every kind and description, with numerous offerings scheduled during the capital’s Olympic moment.
For just plain fun, the bars, nightclubs and ever-popular KTV (karaoke) establishments can be found almost everywhere in the city. Put simply, any would-be international traveller who cannot find nightlife in Beijing is either not looking very hard or should probably seriously reconsider whether they should have left home at all. From cosy nooks with canned music to head-jamming clubs with the latest in contemporary rock ’n’ roll, hip hop and disco or quiet hotel bars and from glitzy inner-city discos and clubs haunted by China’s entertainment elite to nightspots near the city’s colleges and universities in Haidian, where solo players pluck guitars unwired, Beijing has it all in a night scene that is blossoming with creative new ways to make things happen. But every new visitor needs to start somewhere, and that’s where we come into the picture. Relax. Getting from A to B is a simple matter and shouldn't be a problem in 2008 when thousands of English-speaking volunteers will be strategically deployed at various Olympic venues and locations across the city to serve the visitors. With the help of the volunteers or your fellow travellers, hotel concierge or just people on the street, including Beijing’s fantastic cabbies, you should be able to easily find your way to any form of entertainment you desire, especially to night-time hotspots such as Houhai, Sanlitun and Xingbalu or Lady Street where many of the city's bars are concentrated.
So don’t hide out in your hotel room watching CNN or HBO re-runs: Come alive in the new Beijing.
Beijing offers a vast selection of stage performances, ranging from Peking Opera, acrobatics and kung fu to plays, ballets, musicals and contemporary dramas.

Although the first motion picture was introduced to China in 1896, China’s film industry truly began with the shooting of The Difficult Couple (1913), the first Chinese movie. After a century of development, Chinese filmmakers are making their mark worldwide—spurred by the success of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, which won an Oscar in 2004. Beijing premieres most Chinese films, and a greater number of cinemas are now showing original foreign movies.
