Beijing is a fast-changing city with a cultural legacy of more than 5,000 years; in fact, it stretches to the earliest days of the history of mankind. The city deftly blends modernization with its historical legacy; this is vividly revealed in museums, galleries, libraries, and in Beijing’s creative culture.
Creativity and Commerce in Beijing Beijing’s emerging creative industry is both enhancing the municipality’s culture and generating wealth. In addition to repositioning Beijing as a city of new ideas and new thinking, it is also developing many new centres of culture to delight residents and visitors to the city.

Below the fifth floor are restaurants, teahouses and shops. What really distinguishes this bookstore from others is its dedication to customer service. Cotton bags and handcarts are available throughout. Paper and pencils can be found near the bookshelves so people can record their thoughts. Songzhuang 宋庄 Home and workshop to nearly 1,000 artists, including painters, sculptors, performing artists, musicians, composers, writers, photographers and others connected to the fine arts, along with dozens of new galleries. Once a sleepy backwater, Songzhuang is rapidly becoming a new centre of interest on China’s contemporary art scene. It is widely considered more “authentic” than some of the other art communities in the capital. You might want to begin your trip with a visit to the Artists Reception Center on Xiaopu Jie at the village square or to the Songzhuang Art Museum off Xiaopu Jie in northern Songzhuang. Address: Songzhuang Village, Tongzhou District 通州宋庄村 Bus: 938支9 (Board under the Dong Sanhuan overpass at Guomao, just east of the Guomao subway station and the China World Trade Center. Nanxincang 南新仓文化休闲街 Formerly a granary serving the imperial family and court officials during the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties. Alongside Dongsi Shitiao, just inside the East Second Ring Road, this series of graceful old warehouses, dating to the Yongle period (1403–24), reflects the simple but elegant architectural style of the Ming. The 600-year-old imperial granary is now a popular restaurant and entertainment venue complete with three art galleries, an audio book shop, a teahouse and several bars and restaurants. Because the old buildings are too precious to be exposed to open flames, its dozen restaurants are housed in newly built pingfang (one-storey traditional buildings). Architects, archaeologists and preservationists were consulted before construction to ensure that the new construction was appropriate for the area. Address: Dongsishitiao, Dongcheng District 东城区东四十条 Subway Line 2 to the Dongsi Shitiao station.

The park is divided into six themed zones featuring 40 rides, including ten “extreme” rides. A modern shopping complex, an IMAX and seven other cinemas, a “Giant Frisbee,” shoot-the-chutes, a flying rollercoaster, space shots, kiddie rides and 120 games come for an all-inclusive price of 160 yuan (US$17.50). The monumental scale of the Atlantis Zone, the thematic detail of the Maya Zone, the spectacular superman ride and the Giant Frisbee ride that takes 50 people 47 metres up into the air and spins them around are all firsts in China. Other extreme entertainment includes the park’s Drop Tower, inside which riders are repeatedly powered upward 56.3 metres inside a specially constructed tower before being dropped at a speed of 72.42 kilometres per hour, in a terrifying simulated plunge to earth. Another favourite, the Space Shot is more than 62 metres high, with riders pitched into the air at G-forces similar to those experienced by jet pilots.
