Public Safety

安全

  • Beijing has good public security. It is a safe place to live and travel in, with very little violent crime. However it is prohibited to attend or participate in any activities that violate the law.

If you suffer the loss of important items like your passport or other travel documents, you should immediately report the loss to the local police station and the Division of Entry-Exit Administration of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Public Security. At the same time, you should apply to your diplomatic mission in China for replacement of your lost items.

Please be aware that transaction, transfer, fabrication and modification of passport are illegal acts and punishable by law.

  • Useful Tips

If you are involved in a car accident or work injury, you should report immediately to the local police station or the entity that you work for and inform your friends and relatives or your diplomatic mission in China. You can ask your consular official to urge the authorities to punish the person responsible and assist you in receiving compensation through legal means or via your insurance company.

In case of natural disasters you should contact your diplomatic mission in China immediately. Keep important documents and records including passport, exit record, insurance and banking records in a safe place. You should make copies of the important documents you leave at home or take with you as a precautionary measure. Make sure that your car is in safe and normal operating condition and keep a store of necessary food and medicine.

If you see someone behaving in a suspicious manner outside your residence, report immediately to the security guards of the property management department. If you return home to find any unusual signs or signs clearly indicating burglary, do not enter or randomly check the site to find out what is missing: call the police immediately. There are police stations at major road intersections and numerous patrol cars on the streets. The Beijing police can also take your call in English.

Before You Pack

Beijing, as with China in general, is modernizing so rapidly that any suggestions for packing and preparing for a trip should rely only on the latest information from a travel Web site that you can trust.

In short, the best advice for travelling to Beijing or other large cities is: pack light.

Health: Get proper inoculations for the places in which you intend to travel, especially outside the major cities of China or other locales in Asia. Bring essential, properly prescribed and labelled medications for specific ailments. Bring what you trust: your favourite over-the-counter (OTC) anti-diarrheal medicines and cold/sinus medicines, even though safe, reliable local and international OTC brands are available at pharmacies in the city in a pinch.

Hygiene: Do not weigh yourself down by bringing toothpaste, shampoo, soap, toilet paper or other hygienic products. Top brands of these items are available everywhere. Beijing has some of the best cosmetics stores in the world. It is a good idea to carry a partial roll of toilet paper and a few anti-bacterial hand wipes in a handbag or camera bag for obvious reasons, but also to serve as hand wipes and napkins.

Clothing: During the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Beijing will be warm, with some days punctuated by rain showers. So light, easy-dry clothing is best, although laundries are available to care for high-quality clothing. Also handy are light-weight pants with removable legs that can be converted to shorts and that dry easily. Knit shirts with collars are acceptable wear nearly everywhere, but T-shirts will do during the day (please avoid wearing offensive clothing with images or script and clothing with religious or political connotations. Umbrellas can be purchased locally, but a high quality collapsible “golf” umbrella can come in handy in the bright sun, with a heavy rain and to protect camera gear.

Footwear: This is no place to scrimp. Get the best footwear you can afford to do what you want to do in China and break them in before coming to China. It’s the same with socks and other footgear. Sandals are ubiquitous in Beijing in the summertime, as are tennis and other sport shoes. If going hiking or climbing the Great Wall or just walking a lot around the city, wearing sturdy footgear with thick soles and some ankle support is advised.

Hats/Sun Protection: The choices in hats for women in Beijing are virtually unlimited, from synthetic designs to straw hats. Many foreign women wear hiking gear or baseball hats to shield themselves while outside. Many men wear fishing hats and baseball hats. Hats with an Olympic theme are available at licensed Olympic-brand outlets. Many Beijingers wear a baseball hat in the summer, but most women use a light-weight, colourful umbrella to shield themselves from the sun instead.

Camera Gear: Because of recent revaluations of the Chinese renminbi currency, camera gear in China tends to be somewhat more expensive than in the West these days. Again, pack light, but bring plenty of memory cards or computer flash disks or other media for your camera, because they are likely less expensive back home. The people of China love pocket and cell-phone cameras and use them often. DSLR shooters usually carry a wide-zoom lens (24 mm to 70 mm or so for full frame sensor cameras) and a telephoto zoom lens (70 mm to 200 mm) or comparable lenses for use with small-sensor cameras such as Nikon’s DX line. Forget something? No problem: you can find the best camera and camera accessories in the world at various outlets in Beijing and in other large cities at a price slightly higher than in the West today. Buy where local pros buy for assurance. Too many pictures? Get an inexpensive external hard drive at a computer store (less than US$100) and dump the contents of your memory cards on them or go to a local film store and ask the staff there to download your images to a CD or DVD for a small fee.

Other: Any kind of camping, hiking or other outdoor or sporting gear, biking gear, clothing and accessories is now available in Beijing. If you forget something, you can likely replace it.
