By Air

Beijing Capital International Airport is located to the northwest of the city. With the opening of the new Terminal 3 on February 29, 2008, the airport has been equipped to handle 82 million passengers a year, its maximum planned capacity. Passengers may take airport shuttle bus from Xidan, Beijing Railway Station, Gongzhufen, Fangzhuang, Zhongguancun, Wangjing and some other locations to the airport at a cost of 16 yuan (See details below).

The shuttle normally takes about an hour to or from the city centre. See below for full details. A taxi may be more convenient, costing about 85 yuan–100 yuan, including the expressway toll (10–15 yuan).

A new direct subway/light rail line linking the Dongzhimen Station on Beijing Subway Line 2 (the Loop Line) with Terminals 2 and 3 at the Beijing Capital International Airport is expected to be in service for the 2008 Olympic Games, providing travellers with access to Central Beijing in about 15 minutes travel time.

By Train

There are four types of train ticket: hard seat (yingzuo), which is just what it sounds like, and the somewhat more comfortable soft seat (ruanzuo). Use either for relatively brief journeys only, if possible (less than four or five hours). More comfortable for the long-haul are hard-sleeper (yingwo) berths in open compartments and soft sleeper (ruanwo) berths, which come four to a closed compartment.
