The slogan “One World One Dream,” symbolizes an Olympiad rooted in peace, unity and friendship, the spirit of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the 2008 Paralympic Games. After months of debate over ideas about the spirit of the Olympic Games and sifting through suggestions from every corner of China and from around the world, BOCOG announced these four simple, yet powerful words on June 26, 2005.
"One World One Dream" epitomizes the main ideals of the Beijing Olympic Games. It reflects the values of harmony connoted in the “People's Olympics” concept and the core and soul of the “Green Olympics, High-Tech Olympics and People's Olympics” concepts as a whole.
"One World One Dream" is a simple expression that has a profound meaning. It is of China but also of the world. It conveys the lofty ideals of the people of Beijing and China to join hand-in-hand with people from around the world, with the global community and with all of human civilization to create a bright future for everyone. It expresses the firm desire of a great nation, a nation with a long history of 5,000 years that is on its way towards modernization and that is committed to peaceful development, to building a more harmonious society and to ensuring people's happiness. It is a nation that believes these aspirations can be achieved and that 1.3 billion Chinese people can make still greater contributions to the establishment of a more peaceful and brighter world.
“Chinese Seal—Dancing Beijing” is the emblem of the Beijing Olympic Games. The original design of the emblem was selected from nearly 2,000 entries that BOCOG received from around the world.
The emblem delicately incorporates a seal, Chinese characters and the Olympic rings. With a running figure waving its hands to embrace victory, the emblem stands for a vigorous Beijing opening her arms to welcome friends from all around the world. It represents a perfect blending of the Olympic spirit and traditional Chinese culture, and it is a treasure dedicated by the Chinese people to the Olympic Movement.
The Emblem of the Beijing Olympic Games was unveiled August 3, 2003, at the Temple of Heaven.
Beijing 2008 Paralympic Emblem
“Sky, Earth and Human Beings,” the emblem of the Beijing Paralympic Games, is a stylized figure of an athlete in motion, illustrating the tremendous efforts that people with a disability make to achieve success in sports and in their daily lives. With the unity and harmony of “Sky Earth and Human Beings,” the emblem organically incorporates Chinese characters, calligraphy and the Paralympic spirit. It embodies the true Paralympic motto of “Spirit in Motion” and reflects the integration of mind, body and spirit in human beings, the core philosophy of Chinese culture. The three colours in the emblem represent the sun (red), the sky (blue) and the earth (green).
The emblem of the Beijing Paralympic Games was unveiled July 13, 2004.
Beijing 2008 Olympic Mascots – Fuwa
Like the Five Olympic Rings from which they draw their colours and inspiration, the Fuwa serve as the official mascots of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, carrying a message of friendship and peace—and blessings from China—to children all over the world. Expressing the playful qualities of five little children who form an intimate circle of friends, the Fuwa also embody the natural characteristics of four of China's most popular animals: the fish, the panda, the Tibetan antelope, the swallow and the Olympic flame.
Each of the Fuwa has a rhyming two-syllable name, and when you put their names together—Bei, Jing, Huan, Ying and Ni—they say Beijing huanying ni! or “Welcome to Beijing.” It symbolizes a warm invitation to the people of the world that reflects the mission of the five Fuwa as playful young ambassadors for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
The Fuwa also embody the landscape, the dreams and aspirations of people from every part of the vast nation of China. In their origins and from their headpieces, you can see the five elements of nature—the sea, forest, fire, earth and sky—all stylistically rendered in ways that represent the deep traditional influences of Chinese folk art and ornamentation.
The Mascots of the Beijing Olympic Games were officially unveiled November 11, 2005.
Beijing 2008 Paralympic Mascot - Fu Niu Lele
The mascot for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games is Fu Niu Lele. The design of Fu Niu Lele derives its inspiration from the farming cultivation culture of ancient Chinese civilization.
The cow, symbolic of a down-to-earth, diligent, staunch and unyielding spirit, was used to portray the unremitting spirit of athletes with a disability in being the best they can be. It dovetails with the upbeat spirit of Paralympians and the concepts of “Transcendence, Equality, Integration" of the Beijing Paralympic Games.
Fu Niu Lele’s image, with its strong Chinese style, combines the virtues of benevolence, hard work and striving for excellence. Fu Niu Lele, together with the emblem featuring the elements of the sky, earth and human beings, integrates the fine Chinese tradition of “striving to become stronger and great virtues carrying great responsibilities” with the theme of the Beijing Paralympic Games: One World One Dream. It will also send the best wishes of the Chinese people to people with a disability in all parts of the world for happiness, peace and good luck.
The mascot of the Beijing Paralympic Games was officially unveiled September 6, 2006.
Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay
BOCOG officially unveiled its planned torch relay route and the Beijing Games torch on April 26, 2007. The design of the aluminium torch features traditional scrolls and “Lucky Clouds.” The torch is 72 centimetres high and weighs 985 grams. A torch can usually keep burning for approximately 15 minutes in conditions where the flame is 25 centimetres–30 centimetres high in a windless environment.
The torch has been produced to withstand winds of up to 65 kilometres per hour and to stay alight in rains of up to 50 millimetres (mm) per hour. The flame can be identified and photographed in the sunshine and in areas of extreme brightness. It is fuelled by propane and fully accords with environmental guidelines. The design of the torch takes advantage of China’s artistic heritage and technological expertise and embodies the concepts: “Green Olympics, High-Tech Olympics and People's Olympics.”
The torch relay is one of the most important ceremonies of 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Its theme is the “Journey of Harmony,” and its slogan is “Light the Passion, Share the Dream.” The Olympic torch will be carried across all five continents and throughout China.
The Beijing Olympic torch will travel through 21 cities around the world and 31 provinces, autonomous region and municipalities in China, covering 137,000 kilometres over 130 days, the longest length and time the flame has ever been carried. The torch reached the peak of Mount Qomolangma (Mount Everest), the highest peak in the world, on May 8, 2008, in a spectacular feat of mountaineering.

On their front side, the medals bear the standard design prescribed by the International Olympic Committee. On their back, the medal is inlaid with jade with the Beijing Games emblem engraved in the metal centrepiece. A jade “huang,” a semi-circular, ceremonial piece of jade, inspired the design of the medal’s bail that is decorated with a double dragon and a pu (interwoven reed) pattern.
Noble and elegant, the Beijing Olympic Games medals skilfully incorporate traditional Chinese culture and Olympism and will fully recognize and honour the great achievements of successful athletes at the 2008 Games.
