In 2003, about 4,000 institutions in Beijing were engaged in
scientific and technical activities. In addition, there were 14
research institutes in universities, including 6 State-level
institutes; 5,000 intermediate technological agencies; 150
trade societies; and 500 consulting service centres.
These institutions employed 274,000 people, of which
scientists and engineers accounted for 82.8 percent. In 2003,
Beijing had 61 business incubators, more than in any other
Chinese city. About 2,082 enterprises and projects were engaged
in "incubation" activities.
