Wholesale and retail sales and catering companies in the
Chinese capital generated 27.13 billion yuan in added value in
2003, 7.8 percent more than in 2002. By the end of 2003,
Beijing had 100 retail stores with more than 10,000 square
metres of workspace in operation. The total space occupied by
retail operations was 214,000 sqare metres, including 63 large
bazaars, 26 large comprehensive supermarkets, 9 special
supermarkets and 2 storage supermarkets.

Chain companies yielded 46.3 billion yuan in retail sales in
2003, which accounted for 24.16 percent of the city's consumer
consumption. By the end of 2003, 25 foreign-funded retail
enterprises had been approved by the Beijing Municipal
Government, 21 had begun operations, and 50 stores were being
planned.
