Long Distance Transport

2006/07/26

By Air

Beijing Capital International Airport is the largest of China’s airports and is located 25 kilometres (16 miles) northeast of the city centre. Arrivals are on the first floor (ground floor) and departures are just above.

It is accessed by daily shuttle buses costing 16 yuan (leaving from Xidan, Zhongguancun, Beijing Railway Station, Gongzhufen and Fangzhuang, 6 a.m.–7.30 p.m., every half hour.) The shuttle normally takes just over an hour depending on traffic. A taxi may be more convenient, costing about 85 yuan–100 yuan, including the expressway toll (10 yuan).

By Train

Rail is the most commonly used transport mode for domestic long-distance tours. There are four railway stations in Beijing serving the whole country: Beijing Railway Station (East Beijing), Beijing West Railway Station (Southwest), Yongdingmen Station (South) and Xizhimen Station (North). Many bus routes serve these stations. When booking a train there are four types of tickets: hard seat (yingzuo), which is just what it says, and the somewhat more comfortable soft seat (ruanzuo). Use either for relatively brief journeys only, if possible (less than four or five hours). More comfortable for the long-haul are hard-sleeper (yingwo) berths, which you will share with five other people and soft sleeper (ruanwo) berths, which you will share with three other people. None may be described as private or luxurious, but they are comfortable and can be a lot of fun.
