Although the first motion picture was introduced to China in 1896, China's film industry truly began with the shooting of The Difficult Couple (1913), the first Chinese movie. After a century of development, Chinese filmmakers are making their mark worldwide and a fifth generation of filmmakers, including Zhang Yimou (Red Sorghum - Hong Gaoliang, 1987) is receiving critical acclaim.

Chinese film reached the world stage with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon when it won an Oscar in 2000.

Beijing premiers most Chinese films, and a greater number of cinemas are now showing original foreign movies, so the Beijing film scene is never dull.
