Traditional Chinese Medicine

2004/06/23

Beijing's culture is today a complex reflection of China's history and its position in a rapidly changing world. Full of contradictions and spectacular exclamations, it's a city partially frozen in time as well as light-years ahead. As culture is everything, not just the art and grandiosity of its heyday, there is much to see, and enjoy.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete system of healing that emerged in China about 3,000 years ago; it has changed very little over the centuries. It's based on the idea that laws of nature are used to listen to and understand the inner workings of the body.

Your health, like the universe, proponents say, is subject to constant battling between opposing forces of hot and cold, male and female, joy and sadness, which manifest themselves as too much or too little activity in particular organs.

An imbalance between any of these forces causes a blockage in the flow of 'qi' or vital energy traveling through the body, along invisible pathways known as meridians. TCM practitioners typically use acupuncture and herbs to help unblock your 'qi' and bring your body back into harmony and wellness.
