Architecture

2004/06/23

Beijing's culture is today a complex reflection of China's history and its position in a rapidly changing world. Full of contradictions and spectacular exclamations, it's a city partially frozen in time as well as light-years ahead. As culture is everything, not just the art and grandiosity of its heyday, there is much to see, and enjoy.

Architecture

Chinese architecture enjoys a long history and some notable achievements, and it is logically associated with such feats as The Great Wall. In the process of its development, superior architectural techniques and artistic design were combined to make unique Chinese architecture one of the three great architectural systems.

The basic features of Chinese architecture include rectangular-shaped units of space joined as a whole. Dominated by the principles of balance and symmetry, Chinese buildings follow the following rule: a main structure is its axis, and the secondary structures, positioned as two wings on either side, form the main room and yard.

Another characteristic is a wooden structural frame with pillars, beams, and earthen walls surrounding the building on three sides.
