Competition Management

2006/09/11

The organization of events is well-developed and Paralympics preparations are under way. The Beijing Olympic Games will be held during August 8-24, 2008. They will feature 28 sports and will award 302 gold medals. By April 2006, BOCOG had created management teams for all the Olympic sports, and had begun planning for the competition organizations. Competition managers or deputy managers for 27 sports (except tennis) had been appointed and were confirmed by their respective international federations (IFs). Competition equipment procurement and supplies were being obtained. The Games daily competition schedules have been fundamentally determined. On this basis, BOCOG will continue to communicate with IFs to determine final daily competition schedules.

The preparatory works are progressing well. BOCOG is the first committee that will guide an Olympic Games and a Paralympic Games. The goal of the Beijing Olympic Games is to stage "two Olympics with same brilliance." BOCOG have established close contacts with the China Association of the Disabled and the International Paralympics Committee. A Paralympics preparation organization has been founded and a department of the Paralympics was also established within BOCOG.

Under the auspices of the International Paralympics Committee, the 13th Paralympics will be held during September 6-7, 2008, featuring a total of 20 sports. Rowing will be a formal event in the Paralympics for the first time. BOCOG has worked with the IOC to adjust and revise the general working plan for the Paralympics and has laid a solid foundation for sound progress in the Paralympics preparation. In November 2005, BOCOG held the representatives conference of the International Paralympic Committee, as pushed forward the preparatory works of the Paralympic Games.

In July 2005, at the 117th conference of the IOC, a decision was reached that the equestrian events of the Beijing Olympic Games would be held in Hong Kong. This decision expanded the influence of the Beijing Olympic Games and was warmly welcomed by Hong Kong's residents from all walks of life.

On October 5, 2005, the Organizing Committee of the XXIX Olympiad Hong Kong Equestrian Events Committee was officially established, which became a symbol of an expected, thorough equestrian events preparation.

In addition, a preparation organization for the sailing events has been established in Qingdao, along with organizations for football preliminaries in Tianjin, Shanghai, Shenyang and Qinhuangdao. Agreements between BOCOG and the above five cities have been completed, indicating that thorough preparations for the Games outside Beijing are under way.
