Urban Transportation
In 2003, the city invested 12.92 billion yuan (US$1.615 billion) in building of roads, accounting for more than 31 percent of the city's investment in infrastructure development.
In 2004, 100 kilometres of expressways were under construction in Beijing.

New Roads
The 24-km-long Huangcun-Liangxiang section of the Sixth Ring Road was completed and opened to traffic in 2004, along with the Shouti South, Yuanqing, Wutasi, Baiyun and Majiapu West roads. The Liuliqiao passenger transportation hub was put on trial operation.

Rail and Light Rail
The simultaneous construction of Subway Lines No. 5, 4 and 10 (including the Olympic Branch) hit full speed in 2004. These had a combined length of 86.3 kilometres.

Investment
In 2004, Beijing's fixed-asset investment was valued at 252.83 billion yuan (US$31.6 billion), up 17.2 percent over 2003. During the year, investment in infrastructure development amounted to 44.74 billion yuan (US$5.59 billion), up 7.1 percent, accounting for 17.7 percent of the city's total investment in fixed assets.
Investment in construction rose to 63.14 billion yuan (US$7.89 billion) in 2004, up 22.7 percent over 2003.

Culture 
There were 127 museums open to the public during 2004, along with 26 public libraries. Relics-protection projects drew investments of 120 million yuan (US$15 million) to 30 cultural sites. Sixty-two cinemas drew 8.14 million film viewers, generating 185 million yuan (US$23.13 million) in box office receipts. A total of 51 newspapers, 168 magazines and 4,713 books were published in Beijing.

Science 
In 2004, Beijing had 4,000 scientific research institutes and 290,000 people specializing research and development. At the end of 2004, there were 66 business incubators with 2,300 enterprises being developed.

Technology
In 2004, 35,549 technology-related contracts were signed in Beijing, 10.5 percent more than the previous year. These were worth 42.5 billion yuan (US$5.31 billion), 60.1 percent greater than the corresponding figure for 2003. Of these those on technological transfer were valued at 38.75 billion yuan (US$4.84 billion), up by 71 percent.

Sports
There were more than 1,000 registered athletes in the Beijing area in 2004. A total of 1,229 new fitness programmes were launched during the year, in which 117 million yuan (US$14.63 million) was invested.
