Australian Pavilion

2009/11/13

Reflecting Australia’s landscape, the Australian pavilion will be a modernistic and sculptural beauty. The vast spaces found in Australia have inspired the exterior design of the pavilion.

A lightweight steel-frame cladding, which is made of weathering steels manufactured in Australia, will be applied to the pavilion, depicting charm of Australia’s desert. The external form of the pavilion will speak of vastness of the Australian continent. Highlights of the pavilion include:

  • The use of materials for which Australia is famous, such as the steel cladding and bauxite rock base;
  • A form depicting Australia’s geological features;
  • A glazed circulation tube that weaves in and out of the pavilion, creating a sense of travelling.

Sustainability is a key theme of the expo, and the pavilion will promote sustainable elements: the lightweight frame will provide excellent thermal insulation; minimal exterior openings will reduce the servicing load of the building; the height of the structure will assist in the ventilation of the interior space; and large amounts of materials used in the structure, including the cladding panels and steel frame will be recyclable.

The biggest challenge in the project lies in getting and integrating all the parts that make up an expo pavilion, seamlessly, within the time available. But construction is progressing well with completion expected in early 2010.
