We warmly welcome the participants in the 11th China Beijing International High-Tech Expo (CHITEC) which will open on May 20 at the Great Hall of the People in the Chinese capital, running through May 25.

This expo is held every other year, but this one will certainly be different and for a reason: the 2008 Olympic Games. Indeed, the theme of this year’s expo is High-Tech Olympics and scientific and technological innovation.

More than 30 governmental, technological and trade institutions are set to participate in this year’s CHITEC so don’t stop here: find out all about the 11th CHITEC beginning on page 6 in this issue of Business Beijing.

Aside from the 2008 Olympic Games, Beijing is all about business these days, even as reform and opening up and the socio-economic development of China and its capital broaden and deepen. All of this is taking place under the microscopic eyes of a world in which people are only beginning to comprehend the significance of the Beijing Games and China’s peaceful rise.

One city agency that knows the business landscape of the capital is the Beijing Investment Promotion Bureau (BIPB), which exists to ease your uncertainties about investing in Beijing. Through the BIPB’s “Green Channel” service, investors in Beijing can get quick and reliable information about where and when to invest and suggestions concerning potential partners you can trust to get it right the first time. See what the BIPB has to offer beginning on page 34.

No where have the fruits of China’s reform and opening up been more evident than in the response to the shocking, massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake that shook Sichuan Province on May 12 and was felt across Asia from North China to Vietnam and Thailand, including Beijing.

The response to the disaster has been quick, precise and heartfelt. Because of the country’s economic strength, the response has also been well funded and supported by applications of high technology, modern equipment, the latest transportation and medical advances. The media has shown us what has happened and has given us a better feel for what must be done. Our hearts go out both to the victims of the disaster and to their rescuers who are working around the clock under extremely arduous and dangerous circumstances to save lives and succour the living.

We are witnessing a resilient people in one of their finest hours. Good luck to all.
