The Eleventh CHITEC Highlights "High-Tech Olympics"

2008/05/20

The High-Tech Olympics, a key concept for the Beijing Olympics, and scientific and technological innovation will serve as themes for the 11th China Beijing International High-Tech Expo (CHITEC) to be held May 20–25, 2008, in Beijing.

The 11th CHITEC is jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Industry and Information, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), State Intellectual Property Office, and the Beijing Municipal Government.

It will open in the Great Hall of the People with a keynote speech. From May 21 to 25, high-tech exhibitions with a combined display space of 60,000 square metres, six project promotions, six thematic forums and two business gatherings will take place in two dozen venues around the city.

This year is special, with the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and celebrations of the 30th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up taking place. This rare opportunity has given the forthcoming CHITEC a distinctive theme in keeping with the times. As the largest event involving international exchanges and cooperation in science, technology, economy and trade on the eve of the Olympic Games in China, the 11th CHITEC will fully explore the efforts of the Chinese Government and all sectors of society in achieving the goals of the of the "Green Olympics, High-Tech Olympics and People's Olympics" concepts, demonstrating the role of scientific and technological innovation in holding a "unique, high-level Olympics with distinguishing Chinese characteristics," and achievements in the country's economic restructuring and environmental improvements and enhancements to the human ecology.

Most of the exhibitions will be held in the China International Exhibition Center. There will be a High-Tech Olympics Exhibition, four specialized exhibitions and five comprehensive exhibitions.

Six forums on strategic topics in China's high-tech development, economy and society will be held.

During the business talks and promotional activities, domestic and foreign projects will be outlined to potential investors. The recommended promotional and trade-talk projects include transfers of high-tech achievements from key national and local projects during the 11th Five-Year Plan (2006–2010), industrial cooperation, and the export of technology, international bilateral and multilateral economic and technological cooperation.

As in the past, the 11th CHITEC will feature communication with Chinese scholars studying abroad, international science and technology projects, a personnel recruitment event, and an online job fair.

More than 30 governmental, technological and trade institutions from around the globe have confirmed that they will participate as exhibitors or business delegations in CHITEC. Thirty provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions on the Chinese mainland will use CHITEC as an opportunity to promote investment environments, policies and key projects.

World leading brands like Samsung, LG, and Panasonic will showcase some of their R&D results in China for the first time; Haier, Hisense, Changhong and many other domestic brands will display their latest self-innovated products. Keynote speakers that have confirmed they will attend include Sha Zukang, a United Nations under-secretary-general; Per Carlson£¬2007 chairman of the Nobel Prize Committee for Physics; Fransvan Houten president of European Semiconductor Industry Association; Juan Carlos Capñay, executive director of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC); Anil Kane, president of the World Wind Energy Association, and dozens of experts, scholars and leaders of relevant international organizations.

Three Highlights

High-Tech Olympics

The first and most important highlight is the "High-Tech Olympics" concept. The "High-Tech Olympics Exhibition" will be the chief attraction of the 11th CHITEC. It is organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Beijing Municipal Government and the 29th Olympic Games Organizing Committee and is jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Industry and Information, the State Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, the State Administration of Sports, the Bureau of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, China Association for Science and Technology, the National Natural Science Fund Committee, and China Meteorological Administration.

This exhibition will be held in Hall 1 of the China International Exhibition Center with a total area of 8,300 square metres. It will take "science and technology make Beijing better and the Olympic Games more exciting" as its theme.

Newly developed technologies, production processes and products will be displayed including new-energy vehicles and green-energy resources. The exhibition will showcase the efficient use of energy and water that characterizes the Beijing Olympic, from construction of Olympic venues to their use during the Games. High-tech achievements in information and communications and intelligent transportation and security that are being used in the Olympic Games will be shown.

Also included are technological innovations in the construction of the Bird’s Nest, the Water Cube and other Olympic venues, and in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and the Torch Relay.

Independent Innovation

The second highlight to be accentuated is "independent innovation." Improving the ability to innovate independently and building an innovation-oriented country has been a consistent core in CHITEC content in recent years.

The 11th CHITEC will to provide a platform for China's independent, innovative enterprises and China-created technological products to be marketed on the same stage with forefront technological achievements made by international high-tech enterprises. A large number of technologies and products with proprietary intellectual property rights will make their appearance at the forthcoming CHITEC.

The pavilion of Zhongguancun Independent Innovation Achievements will take "Leading InnovationESupporting OlympicsEGoing International" as its theme, and independent innovation as the main thread, focusing on displaying a group of enterprises and high-tech products that have mastered core technologies and acquired international competitiveness in electronic information, high-tech services, clean technology, biomedicine and other key areas.

By then, a group of technologies and products developed by Zhongguancun enterprises including the first mobile phone-TV chip that meets the state mobile multimedia broadcasting industry standard, the intelligent grouping and resource sharing IGRS£©product series that use the world's first 3C integration international standards, China's first 3-D online games development platform, biofilm sewage treatment technologies, large-screen laser panchromatic display systems and more will make appearances at CHITEC.

The "International Forum on High-Tech Enterprises’ Independent Innovation and Brand Building," which will be held for the first time, will focus on high-tech enterprises as the main bodies of innovation, discussing such corporate development strategies as the construction of independent innovation systems and mechanisms in enterprises, the integration strategy of corporate brand management and continuous technological innovation, and independent scientific and technological innovation and industrial development. As for economic and trade talks, activities will be organized to promote series of science and technology products and business cooperation, so as to build a trade docking platform for the independent innovation results.

Ecological Civilization

The third is to highlight the connotation of "ecological civilization". The High-Tech Olympics exhibition will feature a series of scientific and technological innovation achievements in this respect.  The exhibition will dedicate one pavilion to the theme of circular economy, focusing on new technologies and products developed in recent years in environmental protection, energy saving and emissions reduction and the multipurpose use of resources.

Of the six CHITEC forums, two will embody the thematic requirements of "building an ecological civilization." Among them, the "Forum on Resource Conservation and Circular Economy," taking "scientific and technological innovation and ecological civilization" as the theme, will introduce the concept of ecological civilization to clear-water and blue-sky building.

There will be theoretical and empirical discussions on such issues as urban ecological values, energy conservation and emissions reduction, along with the policy environment for the development of a circular economy through such topics as the protection of water resources, sustainable use of water resources and a blue-skies project.

The "International Forum on Energy Utilization and New Energy Development" will focus on efficient use of energy resources and the development of new energy sources, release related industry policies and investment hot spots, and conduct professional and technical exchanges and promotions of research results.
