The lighting of the Olympic torch of the 2008 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, on March 24 was the beginning of far more than just another Olympic Torch Relay or a procession of important ceremonial activities leading up to the Games’ Opening Ceremony on August 8.

Still, it seems the significance of Beijing’s hosting of the Games and its importance to all the people of China and the world has been lost on some casual observers.

With the lighting of the torch, Beijing began a new long march into uncharted territory. The light of the torch will cast a glow on the municipality’s—indeed the country’s—accomplishments in caring for its people by building a sound, sustainable economy; by addressing its environmental shortcomings; by providing safer and more efficient housing; creating a better legal system; by building better transportation systems; and by providing sound and reasonable security and defence systems that are the pride of the nation.

No one knows better than the business community of China how far the country has come just in the last ten years with increased efficiency, convenience and business certainty. Communications are better, transportation is better, personal incomes and business revenues are up, a vibrant entrepreneurial class has emerged, the supply of information and transparency in governmental and social matters…all better, and much of this under the inspiration of the Olympic spirit.

Don’t take our word for it. Instead, use the historic occasion of the Games of 2008 to come to China and see what has been done for yourself. Learn at least a little about what the country and Beijing have in store for the future: it is all written down in detailed plans available to everyone.

At Business Beijing, we strive to give our readers insights into the remarkable historic changes taking place in Beijing. In this month's issue we delve into real estate (see page 12), the important reforms taking place in central government ministries (page 38), the use of commercialization to save ancient structures (page 52) and more. Of course, with the bewildering pace of change, no one can keep up with everything, but you can get a good introduction to China’s capital’s business and cultural life by visiting our Web site at www.btmbeijing.com.

Any suggestions? Feel free to send them along to the editorial address listed on page 3. We are always happy to hear from you, our readers.
