Exhibitions of the Second ICCIE Draw Large Crowds

2007/12/15
text by Chai Jingnan

A model of the Temple of Heaven made of 170 kilograms of gold and silver and 200,000 gems was the greatest of all attractions displayed at the Second China (Beijing) Cultural and Creative Expo.

Its creator, Wang Shuwen, added to the excitement of visitors when he clicked a remote controller that opened a wall of the Qiniandian (Hall of Prayer for Good Harvest), revealing fine and elegant decorations inside.

“This could be called ‘Go into the Temple of Heaven.’ It works by gear wheel,” said an obviously proud Wang.

The expo, featuring 14 exhibitions, was held November 8–11 at the China International Exhibition Centre in Beijing. It gave the public a good opportunity to get acquainted with the various aspects of the municipality’s cultural and creative industry.

In the Students Cultural & Creative Works Exhibition Hall, visitors met with “Albert Einstein,” a robot made by students of the University of Science and Technology Beijing. They also watched football matches played by robots. The "players", so to speak, were made by Tsinghua University students.

To help visitors get the most out of the time they had to tour the exhibition, a remote control electronic book was available that contained all the works and exhibits of the Second Beijing Youth Cultural & Creative Festival.

Visitors learned that DNA does not belong to humans alone: objects such as books, tickets, artefacts, CDs and tapes will have their own "DNA" to verify their identities and origins. The Press, Publications & Printing and Copyright Trade Exhibition Hall advised the public about Synthetic DNA True Product ID Technology (S-DNA for short).

This technology allows product-makers to store product information in a database for future reference.

S-DNA technology was used in tickets for the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Shanghai and at the Beijing A1 Grand Prix. Additional applications that will protect copyrights are likely on the way.

The Animation, Cartoon & Game Exhibition Hall got the lion’s share of attention at the expo, because cartoon animation and gaming are becoming some of the most promising cultural creative industries.

Hip-hop and cosplay performances by students from the Jilin College of the Arts-Animation School attracted numerous reporters and visitors. Art and animation have become a vital part of the soul and lifestyle of a new generation of Chinese young people.

Wacom, the world-famous manufacturer of input devices such as tablet systems, displayed a range of products and allowed every visitor who wanted a hands-on high-tech experience with their products.

Other exhibitions included the Arts & Crafts Trade Exhibition, Sports Industry Exhibition, Tourist Attraction and Commodity Exhibition and Gallery & Artwork Trade Exhibition.
