January 28, 2007–CRH high-speed bullet train pulls out of the Shanghai South Railway Station. The new CRH bullet train, which can travel at 160 kilometres per hour, was put into service in time for the Spring Festival on seven routes including the Shanghai–Nanjing and Shanghai–Hangzhou routes. China handled 25 percent of the world’s total rail throughput in 2006 despite having only 6 percent of the world’s railway tracks.

 

January 25, 2007–A passenger uses a “Passenger Satisfaction Electronic Rating System”to evaluate the conduct of an on-duty police officer at Terminal 2 at the Beijing Capital International Airport. The system allows passengers to evaluate an officer’s conduct with rankings from “satisfied” to “good” or “not satisfied”.

 

January 27, 2007–Shell seeks Chinese talents at a job fair. Global petrol giants are expanding aggressively in the Chinese market. Shell announced recently that it plans to set up 1,000 gas stations in China in five years while its rival BP set its goal at establishing 1,000 gas stations jointly with Sinopec and PetroChina by the end of 2007.

 

January 21, 2007­­–Dressed like clown, Song Feifan is delivering flowers for one of his customers using his electrical bike. Song started his business several months ago and gained instant fame thanks to his eye-catching outfit. He is now planning to hire several more clowns to expand the business.

 

January 31, 2007–SAIC Motor Corporation Limited’s new Roewe 750 sedan comes equipped with a 2.5-liter, V6-engine. The new brand, developed and designed by the company, and its new model sedan had got a high-profile launch around the world. It will sell for 231,800 yuan (US$29,877)–276,800 yuan (US$35,677) and it is expected to be available in major world markets.

 

January 29, 2007–Four economic phenomena indicate that there is a bubble in China’s real estate market, which can be discerned in the industry’s scale, structure, price and profits, according to the “2007 Report on the Development of China’s Service Industry” issued by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The report says proof exists in soaring prices, despite already high base prices; overcapacity with an unbalanced structure; too-high average profits and an economy relying heavily on the real-estate sector; and unstable economic cycles marked by high price hikes and cuts.
