Little Steps Add Longevity2006/08/14
by Loretta Dobbelsteyn Physiotherapist, Manager United Family Hospitals and Clinics - Beijing It is easier to maintain good health through proper exercise, diet and emotional balance than to regain it once it is lost. Dr. Ken Cooper of Dallas, Amazing as it may seem today, Cooper's philosophical assertion that the field of medicine should focus more on disease prevention than treatment was considered revolutionary. Now, most of us take Cooper's advice as a given, but it's not always easy to follow. What if you have not been doing any physical activity for years? Many, who enjoy modern, affluent lifestyles, eat and drink too much and exercise too little. It's even worse if smoking, alcohol or drug abuse is added to the mix. Since we know we should be exercising, we sometimes feel guilty or stressed when we don't. All of these lifestyle choices affect our risks of dying prematurely of heart disease, cancer and diabetes, and it's never too soon to address these issues in your life. If it's been a while since you exercised vigorously, start slowly, but get active. With heart disease continuing as one of the leading causes of death, consider beginning by addressing fundamental risk factors for cardiovascular disease. The American Heart Association has developed an easy way to remember the major modifiable risk factors by using the term? "WATCH." These factors can be changed or modified by you, and experts can assist you in making some simple but important health changes. W > Weight Obesity is a major contributor to many preventable causes of death, including heart disease and stroke. Carrying extra weight is a complex issue involving interactions between cultural, genetic and behavioural factors. But small changes in lifestyles can lead to big improvements. If a person loses just 10 percent of their body weight, there will be a substantial health benefit. A > Activity With the help of technology, we are becoming more sedentary. The two most common reasons for not being physically active are a lack of time and a lack of a safe or convenient environment in which to exercise. T > Tobacco Cigarette smoking represents the single most preventable cause of disease and death. This is an extremely tough habit to break; sometimes mind over matter works well, and experts can assist you with stop-smoking programmes, including acupuncture and hypnosis. C > Cholesterol Elevated levels of cholesterol suggest a threat of heart disease, but, importantly, this factor can be modified. Many people who follow healthy dietary programmes and who engage in regular physical activities demonstrate an improvement in cholesterol metabolism and lower their long-term health risks. H > High Blood Pressure The "silent killer" is so named because people may have elevated blood pressure yet be completely unaware of it. If left untreated it can damage the heart and blood vessels as well as the kidneys and eyes. A simple cuff measure is all that'necessary to confirm your blood pressure. Ways can be found to reduce it, if necessary. Feeling stress these hot summer days? Stress can negatively affect your health. A strong preventative medicine programme must include a discussion of stress management. When asked if small changes in lifestyle can lead to big health improvements, Dr. Cooper responded simply, "Without question." Remember: Get moving! People who are physically active, even minimally, by walking for 20 minutes three times per week may add an extra six years to their lives. If you need some help getting started, experts can help with advice and specific exercise regimes suited to your needs.
