Councillors to the Mayor of Beijing

The International Business Leaders Advisory Council to the Mayor of Beijing will hold its fifth meeting at the Beijing Hotel on May 22. Nineteen council members, all chairmen, presidents or CEOs, have accepted an invitation to attend the meeting, and will also be present at the Ninth China Beijing International High-tech Expo (CHITEC). The main topic at the Leaders’ meeting will be how to manage the future of Beijing Municipality?

 

John Conroy

Chairman of the Executive Committee, Baker & McKenzie

 

John Conroy was elected chairman of the Executive Committee of Baker & McKenzie in October 2004.

He has been a partner in Chicago since 1987 and was elected to serve on the Executive Committee of the international firm in 1998. The following year he was elected a US managing partner; subsequently, he held the position of North American managing partner until October 2004.

He has also held other significant management positions related to his areas of practice including chair of the Global Banking & Finance Steering Committee, chair of the Global Major Projects Steering Committee, and chair of the North American Banking & Finance/Major Projects Practice Group.

 

 

Tony Comper

President and Chief Executive Officer, BMO Financial Group

 

 

Tony Comper is president and CEO of the BMO Financial Group. He was appointed CEO in February 1999, and served as chairman from July 1999 to May 2004 when the bank moved to a non-executive chairman model. In more than three decades with the bank, Comper has served in virtually all its major operating areas. He serves on the Board of Directors of the bank and of its subsidiary, Harris Financial Corporation. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Monetary Conference, vice-chair of the CD Howe Institute, director of the CD Howe Memorial Foundation, Director of Catalyst – New York, chair of Catalyst’s Canadian Board of Advisors, member of the North American Policy Committee of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives, member of the University of New Brunswick’s Forging Our Futures Campaign, and a member of the International Business Leaders Advisory Council of the Mayor of Beijing. Comper served as chair of the Campaign for the University of Toronto, is a past chairman of the University's Governing Council and former vice-chair of St. Michael's Hospital. 

 

 

Shigemitsu Miki

 

Chairman, The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Limited

 

Shigemitsu Miki is currently chairman of The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Limited, and director of the Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Incorporation. In addition, Miki has been serving as vice-chairman of the Japan Business Federation (Nippon Keidanren) since 2003.

Miki began his banking career at The Mitsubishi Bank, Limited, in 1958 and subsequently held a series of managerial positions in corporate banking, treasury, securities and planning. He was appointed a director in 1986 and became the managing director in 1989. In 1994, he became a senior managing director and continued in this capacity upon the merger with The Bank of Tokyo, Limited, in 1996.

In 1997, Miki became deputy president and served as president for four years before his election as chairman of The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, Limited, in 2004, and he continued in this capacity after the merger with UFJ Bank, Limited, in January 2006.

 

Luc Vandevelde

 

Chairman, Carrefour Supervisory Board

 

Luc Vandevelde, 55, of Belgium is married and has one son.

He became chairman of the Carrefour Supervisory Board in February 2005.

He is the founder and managing director of Change Capital Partners, an independently managed private equity firm that focuses on middle market investments that leverage its extensive retail and consumer industries expertise.
He is a non-executive director of Vodafone Group Plc and chairman of the Remuneration Committee. He became president of the European Retail Roundtable in June 2005 and was appointed to the Board of CIES, The Food Business Forum, in September 2005. H
e was recently appointed as a board member of the Bank Société Générale.

Vandevelde is a former chairman and CEO of Marks & Spencer, which he joined in February 2000 as executive chairman before assuming the responsibilities of chief executive from September 2000 until September 2002. His role as chairman became part-time in 2003. He left in May 2004 to return to the Halley Group following the tragic death of its president, Paul Louis Halley.

Vamdevelde received a Business Leader of the Year Award in October 2002 and the Sunday Telegraph Corporate Giant Award in November 2002.

 

 

Oswald J. Grübel

Chief Executive Officer, Credit Suisse

 

Oswald J. Grübel is the chief executive officer of the Credit Suisse Group and of Credit Suisse, and he is the chairman of the Executive Boards of both Credit Suisse Group and Credit Suisse.After beginning his career with Deutsche Bank, Grübel joined the trading area of White Weld Securities, Zurich and London (which was later merged into Credit Suisse First Boston) in 1970 and was appointed CEO in 1978. After holding a variety of positions within the trading activities of the bank, including management responsibilities in Singapore and Hong Kong, Grübel was appointed a member of the executive board of Credit Suisse in 1991, where he was responsible for equities, fixed income, global foreign exchange, money markets and asset/liability management. In 1998, Grübel was appointed CEO of Credit Suisse Private Banking and from 2002 to 2004, he served as the CEO of Credit Suisse Financial Services. A member of the Group Executive Board from 1997 to 2001 and since July 2002, he served as co-CEO of Credit Suisse Group from January 2003 until his appointment as sole CEO in June 2004.

 

Dr. Josef Ackermann

Josef Ackermann, born on February 7, 1948, in the Swiss Canton of St. Gallen, is chairman of the Management Board and of the Group Executive Committee of Deutsche Bank.

He studied Economics and Social Sciences at the University of St. Gallen, and in 1977—after obtaining his doctorate—joined Schweizerische Kreditanstalt (SKA), today’s Credit Suisse Group. In 1990, Ackermann was appointed to the Executive Board of SKA, becoming its president in 1993.

In 1996, Ackermann joined the Board of Managing Directors of Deutsche Bank, where he was responsible for the investment bank division. Under his leadership, this business unit developmed into one of Deutsche Bank’s principal revenue sources and entered the top group of global invesment banks. In 2002, he was appointed spokesman of the Board of Managing Directors and chairman of the Group Executive Committee.

 

Pierre Gadonneix

Chairman & CEO, EDF

 

Pierre Gadonneix hold a PhD in business economics from the Harvard Business School and is also a graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique (1962) and of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure du Pétrole et des Moteurs.

On 15 September 2004, he was appointed chairman and CEO of EDF. Previously, since January 1996, he was chairman and CEO of the Gaz de France Group, after joining the company in 1987, as president. His term of office was renewed in 1999.

In 2000, he was elected chairman of Eurogas, an international association bringing together gas companies and associations from 19 European countries, and in 2004, he became European vice-chairman of the World Energy Council.

From 1978 to 1987, he was director of Metallurgical, Engineering and Electrical Industries at the Ministry of Industry, where he contributed to the restructuring of the French steel industry.

In 1976, he was appointed as a technical advisor to the Minister of Industry and Research. Before that, he worked as Director of the Institut de Développement Industriel (IDI).

Henri Proglio was born on June 29, 1949, in Antibes, France. He is married and has two children. He graduated from the HEC Business School of Paris in 1971. He was appointed as chairman and CEO of CGEA in 1990 and in January 1991 as director. In 1999, he was appointed as the executive vice-president of Vivendi, chairman of Compagnie Generale des Eaux and president and CEO of Vivendi Water. He has been the chairman and CEO of Veolia Environment since 2003.

In 1995, he was appointed as executive vice-president of Metlife. In 1999, he was the president of Institutional Business. He was the executive officer of Metlife Bank in 2001. Yoichi Morishita

Yoichi Morishita, born in June 23, 1934, graduated from the Commerce Department of Kwansei Gakuin University on March 1957. In April 1957, he joined the Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., and became a director and member of the board in 1987. In 1993, he was appointed as president of Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. before becoming chairman of the board in June 2000. In 2003, he was appointed as the chairman of the Postal Services Council of the Japanese Government and chairman of the board of councillors of the Japan Business Federation. He won the title of “The Honorable Citizen of Hangzhou” and “The Honorable Citizen of Dalian” in 1995 and 1996. In 2003, he was awarded “Envoy of Sino-Japanese Friendship” from the China-Japan Friendship Association.

 

Hajime Sasaki

Hajime Sasaki, born in April 6, 1936, received a master’s degree in engineering in the field of electrical engineering from the Division of Research in Mathematical and Physical Science, Graduate School of the University of Tokyo. After graduation, he joined NEC Corporation. In October 1984, he was appointed as the general manager of the of Microcomputer Products Division. He was an executive vice-president in 1994. Since March 1999, he has been the chairman of the board of NEC Corporation. He got the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE), the Achievement Award in May 2001. In November 2005, he won the Deming Prize for Individuals.

 

Michael Treschow

Chairman of Ericsson

 

Michael Treschow has been the chairman of Ericsson since March 2002, chairman of the Electrolux Group since April 2004 and chairman of the Confederation of Swedish Enterprises since May 2004.

He previously served as president and CEO of Atlas Copco AB and the Electrolux Group.

For his excellent efforts with regard to Swedish trade issues, Treschow in June 2000 received the King's Medal of the Twelfth Dimension with the Ribbon of the Order of the Seraphims from His Majesty, the King of Sweden. In May 2000, Treschow was awarded the Spanish order Insigna de Gran Cruz de la Orden del Mérito Civil for strengthening trade relations between Sweden and Spain. Treschow was awarded the French order Grade de Chevalier dans l’Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur in September 2002 for strengthening the trade relations between Sweden and France.

 

Dr. Victor K. Fung

 

Victor K. Fung is group chairman of the Li & Fung group of companies, which includes major subsidiaries in trading, distribution and retailing, including companies such as publicly listed Li & Fung Limited, Integrated Distribution Services Group Limited and Convenience Retail Asia. He also is chairman of the Greater Pearl River Delta Business Council, the Hong Kong Airport Authority and the Hong Kong University Council.

Fung holds a number of civic and professional appointments. He is a member of the executive committee of the Commission on Strategic Development, the Hong Kong Government Judicial Officers Recommendation Committee. He also is chairman of Hong Kong–Japan Business Cooperation Committee. From 1991 to 2000, Fung was chairman of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, and from 1996 to 2003 he was the Hong Kong representative to the APEC Business Advisory Council.

On the Chinese mainland Fung is a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, the International Business Leaders Advisory Council for the Mayor of Beijing, an economic advisor to the People's Government of Nanjing and an advisor to the People's Government of Wuhan. He also is a vice-president of the China General Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Advisory Board of the School of Economics and Management of Tsinghua University and an honorary professor at Renmin University.

 

Peter Woo Kwong-ching, GBS, JP

 

Peter Woo Kwong-ching assumed the chairmanship of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC), the statutory body responsible for promoting Hong Kong's external trade, on October 1, 2000.

TDC plans and carries out global operations, services and promotional activities through an office network covering more than 40 cities in the world.

In Hong Kong, the Council oversees the operation of one of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's (SAR) most important business landmarks, the Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Woo is a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and chairman of the Hong Kong–United States Business Council, Hong Kong Section. He is a member of the Executive Committee under the Commission on Strategic Development.

Woo is chairman of Wheelock and Company Limited and its associate company, The Wharf (Holdings) Limited. He is the founding chairman of Hong Kong Cable Television Limited, New T&T Limited and i-CABLE Communications Limited.

He was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star honour by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government in 1998.

Born in Shanghai and raised in Hong Kong, Woo holds bachelor’s degrees in physics and mathematics from the University of Cincinnati in Ohio, and an MBA degree from the Columbia Business School. He has also been conferred with honorary doctorates from universities in Hong Kong, Australia and the United States.

 

Ian Davis

Managing Director, McKinsey & Company

Ian Davis is the worldwide managing director of McKinsey & Company. In his 27 years with the firm, Davis has advised multinational companies, mostly in consumer industries, on a range of strategic, marketing and organisational issues. 

Prior to his current role, Davis was the managing director of McKinsey's United Kingdom office, which includes the UK and affiliate offices in Ireland and the Middle East, and leader of McKinsey’s Consumer Industries practice in Europe. Davis is a member of the International Business Council of the World Economic Forum and serves on the Board of Trustees of The Conference Board.  He is involved with a number of educational institutions and charities, and is on the Advisory Board of the Judge Institute of Management.

Before joining McKinsey, Davis worked for seven years with Bowater, a paper products manufacturer, in sales, marketing and planning functions. 

He was educated at Balliol College, Oxford University, where he studied politics, philosophy and economics. He is married and has two children. His hobbies include sports (watching and still playing, albeit a bit creakily) and opera.

 

Jorma Ollila

Chairman and CEO, Nokia Corporation

 

Jorma Ollila joined Nokia in 1985 and held a variety of key management positions before taking the helm in 1992. As CEO he presented an ambitious strategy that successfully restructured the former industrial conglomerate, and, along with his team, he accelerated its growth into one of the most successful companies in both the mobile phone and telecommunications infrastructure markets. Under his leadership, Nokia has achieved global market leadership and is listed on five major exchanges.

Prior to joining Nokia, Ollila spent eight successful years at Citibank (today Citigroup), moving through various positions to management board member. He also serves on the boards of Ford Motor Company, Otava Books and Magazines Group, Ltd. and the UPM-Kymmene Corporation. He is a member of the European Roundtable of Industrialists, the United Nations Information and Communications Technology Task Force, and the GBDe Business Steering Committee. Ollila is an Honorary Citizen of Beijing, China.

 

 

 

Samuel A. DiPiazza Jr.

CEO of PricewaterhouseCoopers International Limited

 

Samuel A. DiPiazza Jr. has served as CEO of PricewaterhouseCoopers International Limited since 2002. Prior to that, he served as chairman and senior partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers in the United States and as a member of the Global Leadership Team.

DiPiazza joined Coopers & Lybrand in 1973 and became a partner in 1979. He was elected to the Firm Council in 1986 and headed the Birmingham, Alabama, and Chicago offices before being named midwest regional managing partner in 1992.   Two years later he became the regional managing partner of the New York Metro Region with a dual role as client service vice-chairman. Following the merger of Coopers & Lybrand and Price Waterhouse in 1998, DiPiazza was named the Americas Leader for Tax and Legal Services for PricewaterhouseCoopers, and in 2000 he was elected chairman and senior partner of the US firm. 

DiPiazza currently serves as a trustee of the International Accounting Standards Committee Foundation. He is a vice-chairman of the World Business Council on Sustainable Development and an executive committee member of The Conference Board and the International Business Council of the World Economic Forum. DiPiazza is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations’ Committee on Corporate Affairs, the Aspen-based G 100 Group (CEO Academy) and has served as a trustee for the Financial Accounting Foundation. 

 

Klaus Kleinfeld, Dr.rer.pol., Dipl.-Kfm.
President and CEO Siemens AG

Klaus Kleinfeld, 47, assumed the position of president and CEO of Siemens AG on January 27, 2005. He is the 11th company head in Siemens' 158-year history. Before becoming the CEO, he served as a member of the Corporate Executive Committee beginning in January 2004, and had special responsibility for the groups in Siemens' Information and Communications business areas, as well as for Siemens' regional companies in Africa, the Middle East and the Commonwealth of Independent States. During that time, he also headed Siemens' Corporate Strategies Department.

Klienfeld led the company's USA region as president and CEO of Siemens Corporation from 2002 to 2004. Prior to that, from 2001, he was a chief operating officer. In that New York-based position, he was responsible for leading the 65,000 employees in the US$16.6 billion. company, with business in healthcare technologies and information management, power generation and transmission, automation and controls, lighting, information and communications technologies, transportation, and building technologies.

Prior to his US assignment, he was an executive vice-president and member of the Executive Board of the Siemens AG Medical Engineering Group. He also led Siemens' US$1 billion worldwide angiography, fluoroscopy and X-ray systems business. In both posts, he played a key role in advancing innovations in medical diagnostics and other healthcare technologies.
