China's central bank on March 27 said it expects the country's
gross domestic product growth to slow to 8.9 percent in 2006
from 2005 totals and consumer prices to rise by 2.0
percent.

Corporation, one of the five banks listed on the mainland stock
market, said on March 22 it had received approval from the
country's banking regulator to issue 30 billion yuan (US$3.74
billion) worth of bonds on the interbank bond market.

Expansion is leading Wal-Mart
Stores to hire up to 150,000 employees in China over the next
five years, five times its current work force, the company said
on March 20. Wal-Mart has 56 stores in China and 30,000
employees and plans to open 20 more stores this year.

China's population was
1.306 billion by November 1, 2005, up 3.2 percent from November
1, 2000, when the Fifth National Population Census was
conducted, the National Bureau of Statistics reported on March
16.

An estimated 400 million Chinese are suffering because of
sleep-related disorders, said China Daily on March 21 in a
special story marking the World Day of Sleep on March 21. About
60 percent of adult Beijingers reported suffering from sleep
disorders during the past 12 months, which experts say is
symptomatic of life in a high-pressured, fast-paced
society.

PetroChina, China's
largest integrated oil company, said on March 20 that its 2005
net profit rose 28.4 percent, as high oil prices offset an
operating loss in its refining segment. Net profits for 2005
totalled 133.36 billion yuan (US$16.60 billion), compared with
103.84 billion yuan (US$12.9 billion ) in 2004, the firm
said.

Subscriptions to digital cable television providers could more
than double this year to 10 million, according to Radio and TV
Information (R&TI) magazine on March 22.
10.5 billion
The central government will
set aside 10.5 billion yuan (US$1.31 billion) for development
of agriculture this year, said Finance Vice-Minister Liao
Xiaojun at a work meeting on national spring agriculture held
at Bengbu in East China's Anhui Province, on March
21.
