Sydney–Beijing Olympic Secretariat

2006/02/13

A new office was opened in Beijing on January 17 to make it easier for firms from Australia to conduct Olympics-oriented business in Beijing.

David Churches, director, and Sandy Hollway, senior adviser, were joined by Australian Ambassador to China Alan Thomas, PhD, and He Chuan, representing the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympia (BOCOG) as they cut a red ribbon opening the representative office of the Sydney-Beijing Olympic Secretariat at the Australian Embassy in Beijing.

The new office is an initiative of the New South Wales Government, but is supported by the Australian Government and the private sector in Australia.

Also on hand for the event were representatives of Australian companies currently operating in China and some of their local Chinese partners who are involved in construction projects for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games, including Brian Pilbeam, president of Telstra Asia; John Bilmon, managing director of PTW Architects, the creators of China's new National Swimming Center (the "Watercube"), which will be the venue for swimming events at the 2008 Beijing Games; Thomas Yi,  vice-general manager of China Construction (Shenzhen) Design International, whose firm is also participating in the Watercube's construction, among many others.

In his remarks at the event, Hollway, the former chief executive officer of the Sydney Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (SOCOG), said, "I suggest that the relationship between China and Australia in connection with the Olympics is a special relationship"...and "is also a special connection with the organization of the [Beijing] Games…In Australia, we have the highest respect for the capability of Beijing to organize Games which will be equally successful, perhaps even better [than the Sydney Games]."

The Sydney-Beijing Olympic Secretariat will be guided in Beijing by Simon Cousins and Demi Zhai of Media Soda (Beijing) Consulting Group, Limited, chief representatives of the Secretariat in Beijing.
