Beijing Capital Airport Handles 210,000 Tourists in "Golden Week"

2005/10/28

The Capital International Airport in Beijing handled 218,924 tourists during "Golden Week," the National Day holiday period from October 1 to 7, according to the Beijing Customs on October 10.

The figure included 110,106 outbound tourists and 108,818 overseas tourists coming to China.

The airport received about 30,000 visitors on each of the seven days, an increase of 20 percent over the same time last year.

The airport adopted a series of measures, including opening temporary channels, to guarantee the smooth flow of tourists during the National Day holiday period.

Customs officers also stepped up efforts to crackdown on smuggling activities, smashing six smuggling cases and seizing illicit money totalling 1.36 million yuan (about US$167,000).

The National Day holiday period and the weeklong May Day and Spring Festival (China's Lunar New Year holiday) periods are described by Chinese as "Golden Weeks." Millions of Chinese take the opportunity to travel around the country and the world as well during these holidays.
