Food prices at Beijing Airport Reduced

2005/10/28

Food and drinks prices in the two terminals of Beijing Airport fell 10 percent to 40 percent on October 10 after the airport launched a campaign to reduce high food prices, the Beijing Daily reported.

The move was designed to keep food prices at the airport in line with the prices in Beijing's urban districts, an airport official was quoted as saying.

Items covered by the move included 852 categories of food, accounting for half the total, according to the report.

The price of coffee dropped the most, by 40 percent. A cup of coffee now costs around 20 yuan (US$2.50), compared with 88 yuan (US$10.88) four years ago.

In addition, the airport cut rental fees for restaurants and adjusted the rental fee structure to help reduce food costs. The airport now also allows KFC and other Chinese and foreign fast-food giants to open outlets at the terminals to cater to the different tastes of customers.

A customer told Beijing Daily that four dishes and one soup cost about 165 yuan (US$20.45) at the airport, almost the same cost as at a good restaurant in the downtown area.

High food prices at the airport were often complained about by passengers in the past.
