Technology Boosts Tibet's Development

2005/08/14

China will use its technological power to help enhance economic development in the Tibet Autonomous Region, an official with China's Ministry of Science and Technology said on July 25, at a national meeting on Tibet aid work.

The goal is to speed development by using policy and technological assistance from the central government, according to China Radio International (CRI).

Wu Zhongze said suitable technologies will be used to nurture industries in the region. Multiple ways of cooperation and research will be used to focus on local agriculture and animal husbandry, pharmaceutical production and the use of new energy sources to take full advantage of Tibet's regional advantages.

During the session, more than 70 aid programmes have been signed valued at about 35 million yuan (US$4.3 million).

In recent 10 years, 74 million yuan (US$9.13 million) has been given by the Department of Science and Technology to help develop Tibet in forms of money, materials and projects. Remarkable progress, especially in its top industries, has been reported.
