Beijing to Build Permanent Home for Street Children
2005/08/14
Beijing will build a permanent aid centre for street
children in its suburban Daxing District according to a
Xinhuanet report.
The centre, designed to receive as many as 400 children,
ages 3 to 18, will be the first aid centre for minors in the
Chinese capital, Li Jun, director of the Beijing AID Affairs
Management Centre, said on July 27.
To cope with an immediate need, the municipal government
approved building of a temporary aid centre for homeless
children in June 2004. It was located in an abandoned primary
school and provided 150 beds.
"Even though the new centre can take in more children, it
will hardly meet the actual needs of children waiting for help
in streets," said Li, adding the government plans to build more
aid centres in the future.
