Seven Million Second-generation ID Cards Issued

2005/08/14

About 7.09 million "second-generation" ID cards had been issued to residents in Chinese capital by June 30, China New Network reported.

A total of 5.25 million cards were issued during the first half of this year, fulfilling a target of 5 million six months ahead of schedule.

All Beijing residents are expected to get their new ID cards within 30 days of applying for them.

Citizens must show ID cards when registering for marriage, travelling by air, checking in at hotels or opening bank accounts.

The second-generation ID cards, which have embedded computer-chips, were first launched in Beijing, Shanghai and Suzhou in March 2004. The nationwide distribution officially began in 2005.

The project to upgrade ID cards for 800 million Chinese adults is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2008.
