Beijing Olympic Broadcasting Company Opens

The Beijing Olympic Broadcasting Company Limited (BOB), host broadcaster of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, was inaugurated on May 31 in Beijing.

On behalf of both partners, Liu Jingmin, executive vice-president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) and Hein Verbruggen, chairman of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Coordination Commission, cut a ribbon signifying the beginning of BOB’s official operations.

BOB is registered as a joint venture between BOCOG and OBS under the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The company will be in charge of producing and distributing the international radio and television signal of the Olympic Games and Paralympics Games in 2008, building and operating the International Broadcasting Center (IBC) and other facilities designated for broadcasting and service definition for broadcasters around the world.

Jiang Xiaoyu, executive vice-president of BOCOG and chairman of BOB board, said the inauguration ceremony marked another milestone for the broadcasting preparations of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The Beijing Olympic Broadcasting Committee (OBC), established recently in Beijing, will be responsible for coordination with government organizations, and will provide support for the operations of Beijing Olympic Broadcasting. On behalf of BOCOG, Jiang extended great appreciation to local governmental entities and the International Olympic Committee for their cooperative support during the establishment of BOB.

Manlo Romero,general manager of OBS and CEO of BOB said in his speech that the establishment and operation of BOB have been greatly supported by the IOC, BOCOG and relevant organizations and departments. He said that the 2008 Olympics will provide high-density TV broadcasting, bringing worldwide spectators marvellous Games while creating a rich legacy for the TV broadcasting industries of China and the world.

BOB has about 40 employees. It will recruit 4,000 staff with professional skills for the Games.

It is expected that the BOB will rent about 60 broadcasting vans, 1,000 cameras, and build an 80,000-square-metre IBC to produce approximately 4,000 hours of live Olympic coverage.

A cumulative audience of more than 40 billion is expected to view the Olympic Games via over more than 200 broadcast outlets.
