Beijing Olympic Motto to be Announced

The theme motto for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games will be officially announced during the Third Beijing 2008 Olympic Cultural Festival, BOCOG announced on June 6.

At a press conference held at the Beijing Olympic Media Centre, Wang Ning, director of the Culture and Ceremonies Department of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG), announced that the annual Olympic cultural festival would be held from June 23 to July 16 in Beijing. An expected highlight of the festival is expected to be the announcement of the theme motto, or the theme slogan, for the Beijing 2008 Games, which has been selected from about 21,000 entries that people submitted to BOCOG from across the country and around the world.

Other events include a number of open-air cultural activities at Chaoyang Park (in Chaoyang District), the Shichahai area (Xicheng District), Ditan Park (Dongcheng District), Zhoukoudian Cultural Square (the suburban Fangshan District), Tianqiao Folk Customs Cultural Square (Xuanwu District) and Lianhuachi Park (Fengtai District), where art performances, exhibitions of calligraphic works and paintings, concerts, forums on Olympics, and art performances by handicapped people will be featured. Licensed Olympic products and souvenirs will be sold at these locales.

All the cultural activities that are to be held in the parks and open-air cultural squares begin on June 23, International Olympic Day. The Beijing International Sports Film Week is scheduled to start on June 25, one day before the opening ceremony for the cultural festival will be held at the China Millennium Monument.

The top ten songs selected from submissions to the second-round solicitation for the Beijing 2008 Olympic theme songs will also be released. The final theme song for the Beijing Olympic Games will be chosen from the winners of annual theme song solicitation events which will run until 2007.

The festival is jointly sponsored by the Chinese Ministry of Culture, the State General Administration of Radio, Film and Television, the State General Administration of Sports, the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the China Disabled Persons’ Federation, the Beijing Municipal Government and BOCOG.
