Letter from the Editor - November 2004 (100th Issue)
2004/11/15
We are living in an era when economic development is a key
concern of leaders everywhere, and not the least leaders in
China and Beijing.
Writing in the 1920s and 30s, the late historian Oswald
Spengler advised young people looking to the future to get
involved in business life. Now, the wisdom of Spengler's
suggestion is apparent, especially in China under its reform
and opening policies. To be involved in today's world is to be
involved in business and economic development.
With its origins in simple mercantile and corporate
organization, the motive to economic development and holistic
thinking about economies has become the dominant cultural
phenomenon of our time. We need only coolly appraise the
performance of countries and leaders in the world to see that
where economic development is highly valued, the people are
clothed, housed, fed and secure. Otherwise, people suffer.
Business Beijing magazine was born of China and Beijing's
reform and opening. For ten years and in 100 issues, we have
tried to inform the world about China's view of economic
development and about the investment possibilities and
responsibilities stemming from it.
With the help of our sponsors, the Information office of
Beijing Municipality, the Beijing Bureau of Commerce, the
Development and Reform Commission of Beijing Municipality, the
China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Beijing
Sub-Council, and our advertisers, staff and contributors, we
will continue to explore the increasingly complex world of
business in China's magnificent capital city and to serve the
business community's needs.
