Samsung Expanding Handset Business in China
2004/11/15
Brief by Jack Zhong
South Korea's Samsung Electronics is aggressively expanding
its mobile phone portfolio in China in a bid to win an even
bigger share of the local market.
Samsung will launch an additional nine handset models before
year's end, said Zhou Xiaoyang, president of Samsung's wireless
division in China.
That will bring to 30 the number of cell phone models launched
by Samsung in China this year, he said.
That is in stark contrast with most Chinese handset
manufacturers, and even some major global players, who have
been slow to introduce new models in China, because of
slowdowns in their operations.
Six of the nine models will be GSM phones. The other three will
be CDMA models.
The models will include megapixel camera phones, "slide-cover"
handsets and dual-mode phones, which will be compatible with
both GSM and CDMA networks.
