2004/08/26

It has been a fast-paced month for us at Business Beijing.

Along with full-coverage of the Eighth Beijing-Hong Kong Symposium on Economic Cooperation, we operated an information desk at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre during the event from September 2 to 3, and for the first time distributed 20,000 copies of Business Beijing in Hong Kong.

The magazines were distributed via convenience stores in Hong Kong, including the 7-Eleven chain which also operates in Beijing; at the convention and exhibition centre and at 50 five-star hotels in the host city.

In addition, we've put a lot of effort into coverage of the inaugural China Open tennis tournament now underway at the new Beijing Tennis Centre stadium in Beijing through September 26. A public-private venture involving the Chinese General Administration of Sport, the Beijing Municipal Government, the TOM Group of Hong Kong, Media Serv Asia Pacific Limited, Beijing Youth Daily, the Chinese Tennis Association, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sport and dozens of major domestic and foreign corporations that operate in China, the Open was established as a "private, non-governmental affair" and is being operated as such.

Organizers know the eyes of the world will focus on how well Beijing handles this major international sports event, both because Beijing is getting ready to host the 2008 Olympic Games, and because of the glamorous stars who have committed to play here.

Since Business Beijing is being distributed both at the China Open venue and at the host Shangri-La Hotel, we want to join the co-organizers of the event, Minister Yuan Weimin of the General Administration of Sport and Beijing Mayor Wang Qishan, in welcoming all those who have helped make the China Open possible, especially athletes from the WTA and ATP pro tours such as Svetlana Kuznetsova, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Carlos Moya, Paradorn Srichophan, Zheng Jie, and Juan Carlos Ferrero who have given the tournament the instant credibility that it deserves.

As one professional player said, "It's a fantastic stadium, the courts are great and the players' facilities are fantastic. I will be back."

We hope all your ventures work out as well as the China Open's seem to be.
