Beijing Driver's Test to Be More Difficult

2004/08/26

Driving in Beijing is a headache for many, because of traffic jams, unpredictable traffic controls, and an ever-increasing number of new drivers. Beijing is set to reduce the number of traffic accidents by introducing a more difficult driving test.

The new test will be formally introduced before the end of this year. It includes nine test items instead of the previous three, and the standard will be set at a higher level.

In an attempt to familiarize drivers with the real road conditions in Beijing, the test will include some new items that are unique to the situation in the Chinese capital.

For instance, Beijing has a lot of hutongs, which are quite narrow. If drivers don't have the nerve to drive through them quickly, traffic jams can easily result. So a special test has been designed for test-takers to drive through a narrow road within a set period of time.

By October, all driving schools in the city will finish their renovation work to cater to the new test.
