Reports of 2008 Olympic Funds “Inaccurate,” Newspaper Apologizes
2004/07/15
Zhang Haifeng, spokesperson for the Beijing Organizing
Committee for the XXIX Games (BOCOG), said a June 24 news story
suggesting that Beijing Olympic organizers had misused funds
earmarked for Beijing's Games was factually "inaccurate."
The story, originally carried by China Daily,
was retracted by the national newspaper on page 2 of its June
25 edition. The retraction, that stemmed from a mistaken
translation in a broader finding of misused public funds, was
greeted with relief by Olympic watchers worldwide.
Zhang said, "The June 24 report in China Daily
regarding the State General Administration of Sport's misuse of
special funds for the Chinese Olympic Committee to build
apartments for its staff does not have any relation to the use
of BOCOG's funds; China Daily, in covering the news,
made a mistake in translating the name of the institution
referred to by China's Auditor-General Li Jinhua; [BOCOG] uses
its funds in strict accordance with the regulations and rules
set by the International Olympic Committee." China Daily
apologized for "any inconvenience brought" to BOCOG and related
parties.
