Logistics Operators to Thrive in 2008 Olympic Economy
2004/07/15
The huge logistics demands of Beijing's Olympic Games have
been estimated in a study by Professor Zhang Wenyuan of Beijing
Jiaotong University.
According to the study, BOCOG estimates that the Beijing
Games will attract a total of 200,000 athletes, journalists,
officials and delegates from 200 countries. Of this
number, athletes are expected to number 20,000. The Games will
require more than 1.2 million items of sports instrumentation
and equipment.
The study estimates that Games-specific logistics demand
will top 1.25 billion yuan (US$151 million), with Games-time
requirements in Beijing generally adding 490 million yuan
(US$59 million) to the bill.
Key figures in the study indicate that 71.3 percent of
demand is expected to be in catering and retail. Garbage
disposal alone is expected to have a value of 1.08 billion yuan
(US$130 million).
