Athens 2004 Security Implemented
2004/07/15
"There are ... no threats or evidence of threats against the
Athens Olympics," Interpol Secretary-General Ronald Noble
announced on June 30, 2004. The former chief
law-enforcement officer of the US Treasury, who was in Athens
for meetings with Greek authorities, lauded Greece's
"extraordinary amount of commitment" to ensuring the safety of
the first Summer Olympics since the September 11, 2001,
terrorist attacks in New York City.
Athens 2004 will represent the most costly security
undertaking in Olympic history, in excess of 1 billion euros
(US$1.2 billion), and will require the presence of more than
70,000 Greek police and soldiers. Full Olympic security
measures were implemented in all Athens venues on July 1.
The Athens Games are scheduled for August 13-29.
Noble said that Interpol officials hope to open talks with
Chinese officials about the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
