Report Says 3G Investment to Intensify in Advance of 2008
2004/07/15
China's 3G high-speed mobile data networks will service
72.37 million users by 2008, according to a report issued by
Interfax on June 17, 2004. Digital Olympics watchers predict 3G
will be a key technology used to support the Beijing Games,
because 3G supports demanding wireless data applications such
as full-motion video on 3G-capable handsets.
The Interfax report predicts that more than US$5 billion
will be invested in China's 3G sector in 2005, with the WCDMA
standard receiving the greatest proportion. The competing
TD-SCDMA standard is likely to be a second-place runner, with
the CDMA2000 in third, the report suggests.
The report predicts that China Mobile, the dominant mobile
carrier, will "definitely choose" the WCDMA standard, while
runner-up China Unicom will opt for CDMA2000. China
Netcom, China Telecom, China Railcom and ChinaSat are likely to
get 3G licenses.
