Business Beijing this month chronicles some of the steps the People's Government of Bejing Municipality is taking to ensure that the quantity and quality of the city's water supply is secured for generations.

An adequate water supply is, of course, a daily necessity of the city's estimated 14.6 million residents, but it is also vital for the success of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and economic development. It is essential for achieving the goal of a "Well-off society." It is clear that Beijing's business community has a huge role to play in helping the city solve its water security problems. Business Beijing's Vincent Lu offers some ideas about where to begin on page 16.

Business Beijing has also been monitoring developments concerning the September 10-26 China Open at the new Beijing Tennis Center. Both of the world's top professional tennis tours, the men's ATP tour, and the women's WTA Tour, have committed themselves to making the China Open a spectacular annual event worthy of comparison with Wimbledon and the US, French or Australian opens. See Business Beijing's Charles J. Dukes?article on the China Open on page 32.

This month's issue also highlights: new government "work rules" and laws that are expected to have a profound effect on the way governments at all levels in China conduct their administrative duties in line with Premier Wen Jiabao's call to "put people first." Also highlighted are the rise of the private education and service industries in Beijing and many other things that those who live, work and invest in Beijing may find interesting.

And last, but not least, Beijing This Month Publications announces the launch of its new Web site at http://www.btmbeijing.com, a Web site created to serve the needs of the international business community, advertisers, residents and visitors to Beijing. We expect the Web site to become a powerful resource for all those who use it.

Good luck in all you do,

Editor
