Regulations to Protect Stray Animals

2004/07/14

Beijing has added new draft stipulations to its animal epidemic prevention regulations in order to alleviate the problem of trapping animals.

The draft will be discussed by the Standing Committee of the Beijing Municipal People's Congress this September.

Under the new stipulations, those who abuse or desert animals will be punished. Epidemic prevention departments have a responsibility to take care of street animals.

It is estimated that there are about 500,000 stray cats in Beijing and the China Small Animal Protection Association has to take in numerous unwanted cats and dogs.

The enormous number of homeless small animals has affected the environment in the city and the problem is getting worse as these animals reproduce.
