Qingdao Celebrates Sailing-venue Groundbreaking

2004/06/15

Qingdao, a coastal resort city located 640 kilometres east of Beijing, celebrated its 2008 Olympic sailing-venue groundbreaking on May 28.  The ceremony, attended by the IOC s Hein Verbruggen, leading BOCOG identities, and local officials, took place seaside at Qingdaos Fushan Bay.

The International Sailing Centre covers a total area of 45 hectares, said Qingdao Mayor Xia Geng.

The project includes an Olympic village, administrative facilities, and facilities for athletes, the media, logistics and security. The overall 77,000 square-meter complex is expected to be completed in the first half of 2006.

The International Sailing Centre will play host to a sailing regatta in 2008, and is expected to become a national marine sports training centre after the Games.
