Qingdao Celebrates Sailing-venue Groundbreaking

Qingdao, a coastal resort city located 640 kilometres east
of Beijing, celebrated its 2008 Olympic sailing-venue
groundbreaking on May 28. The ceremony, attended by the
IOC s Hein Verbruggen, leading BOCOG identities, and local
officials, took place seaside at Qingdaos Fushan Bay.
The International Sailing Centre covers a total area of 45
hectares, said Qingdao Mayor Xia Geng.
The project includes an Olympic village, administrative
facilities, and facilities for athletes, the media, logistics
and security. The overall 77,000 square-meter complex is
expected to be completed in the first half of 2006.
The International Sailing Centre will play host to a sailing
regatta in 2008, and is expected to become a national marine
sports training centre after the Games.
