Public Facilities in Beijing Must be Convenient for the Disabled

2004/06/15

Beijing has issued the first regulation in China that requires public places like office buildings and residential areas to provide special facilities for the disabled.

The law was put into practice on May 16, which was the 14th National Day of Disabled Persons. Construction companies must now take the disabled into consideration when building, reconstructing or expanding the projects.

Public facilities completed before May 16 should still follow the law, and will be required to upgrade to better suit the needs of the disabled.

Officials of projects who disobey the regulation will be punished and could even face criminal charges. Also, those found damaging or removing the special facilities will be fined from 3 yuan to 30,000 yuan.
