Beijing's prime annual showcase for promoting its high-tech products and latest developments will be staged for the 7th time, from May 21 to 26, in the Chinese capital. The China Beijing International High-tech Expo (CHITEC), known as the Beijing International High-tech Industries Week when first launched in 1998, has seen a steady increase in exhibitors and visitors each year, and has become well regarded both at home and abroad. As the 6th Expo last year was put off until September due to the SARS outbreak, the interval between them is relatively short, causing some preparation difficulty for both the organizers and participants. Even so, according to the organizing committee, some 30 top executives from Fortune 500 companies the largest number ever have confirmed their participation; over 2,100 domestic and foreign high-tech enterprises, research organizations and universities have decided to take part in the exhibitions; and 31 Chinese provinces, municipalities as well as the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions will send large-scale governmental and business delegations to the Expo. After ten years of efforts, China has now made breakthroughs in a set of key technologies applicable to the production of electric vehicles, and a 24,000-square meter factory capable of producing 1,000 EVs annually has been set up in suburban Beijing s Miyun County. During the 2008 Olympic Games, Beijing will employ some 1,000 environmentally friendly electric vehicles for public transportation as part of its efforts to host a "green" Olympiad.
