DHL to provide domestic services in China

2004/05/15

Express delivery and logistics giant DHL announced on May 10 the start of their express services inside China, the first foreign express delivery company to do so.

"To provide home express service in China is a milestone in DHL's development in China, which marks a large step in DHL's cooperation with China National Foreign Trade Transportation Group (Sinotrans)," said Dr. Klaus Zumwinkel, chairman of Deutsche Post World Net.

According to Dr. Zumwinkel, from 2004 to 2008 DHL plans to invest over US$215 million in China to develop its domestic express service and improve its infrastructure in China, including expanding four port operation centres, establishing 14 new branches, setting up three express logistic centres and 16 strategic spare parts centres.

Moreover, DHL Denzas Air & Ocean will establish two logistics centres in Pudong District and Jiuting Town Songjiang District in Shanghai. DHL's logistics service in Shanghai Pudong Airport went into operation on May 10.

China is one of the fastest developing markets for DHL's global network, expanding at an annual rate of 35 to 45 percent in recent years.

The cooperation between DHL and Sinotrans began in 1986 when the two established DHL-Sinotrans, the first joint venture in the history of express delivery in China.
