Airport Expands for 2008

2004/05/14

A US$2.3 billion expansion project for the Capital Airport was launched on March 28 as part of the city s preparations for the 2008 Olympic Games, state media said.

The expansion project will include a new terminal, a new runway, a cargo zone and auxiliary projects, expanding annual capacity of the airport to 60 million passengers and 1.8 million tons of cargo upon completion in 2007,  Xinhua News Agency reported.

An international consortium composed of Naco of the Netherlands and Foster of Britain won the bid to build the new terminal building, it reported.

The airport, Chinas busiest, opened up its second terminal in 1999, with Terminal One still undergoing renovations and set to reopen soon. Annual handling capacity of existing facilities is about 35 million passengers.

According to earlier plans, Air China, Chinas flagship carrier, as well as Hong Kong, Macao and foreign airlines will occupy the new terminal, while domestic airlines will be housed in the existing ones.

China s air passenger traffic will rise by 20 per cent this year to 103.8 million as the economy expands and the government allows foreign carriers to fly more frequently over China, the International Air Transport Association said.
