Summer Lunch Specials

2009/06/01

Go Underground

This breezy new eatery’s basement location belies its bright, modern environment and high value for the CBD lunchtime crowd. The design comes courtesy of the Japanese trendsetting Super Potato, while the food encompasses Asian, European and US specialties. Each cooking station is completely open and concentrates on a particular style, whether sushi, grilled foods, pastries or deep-fried items. Sandwiches and desserts are also available for take away at the delicatessen-style counter, which also sells a range of cheeses and salamis.

The menu can be treated a la carte, but its front page deals in lunch specials such as fish and chips with soup of the day (58 yuan), burger with wedge fries (50 yuan), and grilled sausages with soup (48 yuan). A large leafy salad can be had for 42 yuan, while the wine list has to be among the city’s most affordable, with a quaffable tempranillo wine selling for just 25 yuan a glass, or 130 yuan for the full bottle.

Classic French

Occupying part of the old ballroom in the Raffles Hotel, Jaan is one of the only restaurants in Beijing with a genuine hint of pre-revolution decadence. The newly launched lunch deal picks up that theme with a delightful three-course offering, chosen from a short menu that changes every week. BTM opted to start with steamed foie gras with cabbage and ginger (an interesting Chinese twist) and scallops with cauliflower and saffron emulsion. The main course was a choice between lamb chops with red pepper puree and shallots and seared tuna with asparagus and coriander sauce. For dessert, everyone plumped for the real show-stopper: a pineapple gazpacho. While deemed “too sour” by the sole Chinese at the table, the Europeans present declared it a triumph, original and refreshing. The lunch costs 165 yuan net and includes a glass of wine: in our case, a very palatable Chilean cabernet sauvignon.

Alternative French

Convenient for Sanlitun shoppers, this is among the most reliable and best-value deals in town: 65 yuan for starter and main course plus a glass of wine, or 85 yuan to include dessert, as well. An extra 20 yuan buys the option of their excellent moules marinieres (sailors’ mussels). Portions are generous and the environment is friendly and relaxing, and often dominated by French accents.
