Human and Nature Exhibition Begins

2009/06/01

Two Korean and three Chinese artists participated in the “Human and Nature Exhibition at the Korean Cultural Service, China complex off Guanghua Lu April 24–30, 2009.

This exhibition, organized and supported by the Korean Art Center in China and the Chinese International Culture Exchange Centre, featured the contrasting viewpoints on humanity and nature of Korean artists Park Jong-ha and Park Sung-sil and Chinese artists Pan Ying, Hu Mingzhe and Piao Chunzi.

The exhibition explores two main themes in two styles. The first theme was “Who Am I?” and the second was “What Is Nature?” The styles involved realistic expression, which includes visible figures and forms, and abstract expression, which involved various materials and direct communication using intuition rather than realism.

Piao Chunzi, Pan Ying and Park Sung-sil are realists. Piao and Pan use human figures that illustrate their cultural backgrounds and identities. Their images of figures seem very similar to one another but are characterized by their own traditional dress and ornaments that convey various meanings. Their paintings simultaneously demonstrate a variety of peoples but also their unique natures. Piao Chunzi’s work was a surrealistic scene of a woman’s image with a fish that symbolizes the coexistence of man and nature.

In contrast, Park Sung-sil deals mainly with plants and natural beings that reflect their own identities and powers of life.

Park Jong-ha and Hu Mingzhe use rationality and intuition to express the character and essence of nature.
