Green Approaches to Good Health

2008/02/01

With a quickening pace of life, more people find themselves troubled by maladies related to their mental health. Many report getting tired easily and pain centred on the back and neck and headaches.

Yet, when these same people go to a hospital and have a physical, their doctor reports finding nothing wrong with them physically, which, of course, suggests no cure. This is when people might consider turning to the ancient and mysterious Chinese traditional medical method, chiropractic.

Chiropractic is a health care approach that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, which affect the general health. It involves the relationship between the body’s structure—mainly the spine—and its functioning. Although practitioners may use a variety of approaches to treatment, they primarily perform adjustments to the spine with the goal of correcting alignment problems and supporting the body's natural ability to heal itself.

Chiropractors, also called chiropractic physicians, use a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examinations, diagnoses and treatments. The most common therapeutic procedure is known as “spinal manipulation” or “chiropractic adjustment.” The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become restricted in their movement as a result of tissue injury. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, allowing tissues to heal.

Chiropractic is one of the safest, drug-free and non-invasive therapies. Says Diao Wenchang, an acknowledged expert in this field: “Most patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, but some may experience mild soreness or aching, just as they do after some forms of exercise. This will fade within 24 hours.”

The roots of chiropractic care can be traced all the way back to the beginning of recorded time. Documentation dating back to 2700 BC mentions spinal manipulation and the manoeuvring of the lower extremities to ease low back pain. Since childhood, Diao has been learning patrimonial chiropractic skills passed down from Sui Dynasty (AD 581–681), and he has completed a modern theoretic system of prevention towards the sub-state of mental health.

In September 2007, Diao opened the Diaoshi Health Garden in Jianwai SOHO in hope of allowing more people benefit from chiropractic. The Diaoshi Health Garden provides professional health consultations, and various chiropractic therapies. “Though chiropractic originated in China, most Chinese nowadays are either unfamiliar with it or misunderstand this precious heritage. My goal is to spread this green and effective medical culture to more people, whether Chinese or foreigners.”
